Busy business this week 💼
Move over E-commerce, Quick-commerce is here. Two 19 year old Stanford dropouts raised $60 million for their 10-min grocery delivery app Zepto. Boy are we humans becoming lazy 🥱 🛵.
Not as good a going for another Z company.. US property trading website Zillow is shutting down their direct home buying business, sadly laying off 25% of its workforce. Their algorithms sure messed up after not being able to accurately predict pricing variations for homes Zillow bought. They’re having to sell over 60% homes at prices lower than what they bought at 😱.
Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook on the other hand is deleting facial recognition data of over 1 billion users. 😀😄😃 It’s auto user tagging feature launched in 2010 allowed users to tag people in photographs by using facial recognition technology. Given rising privacy concerns and possible law suits ⚖️, storing this data was turning out to be rather risky for Meta.
Cambridge University research indicates Bitcoin consumes more electricity than all of Holland 😱 - check out this site for some fun comparisons e.g. ACs use nearly 20 times more electricity than Bitcoin mining. What about Gold mining? 🤔
The US House of Representatives, finally passed President Biden’s $1.2 Trillion infrastructure investment plan. From a $65 billion investment in Clean Energy 🔋 to $110 billion towards building Roads & Bridges 🌉 and a cool $105 billion going to Public transit and rail works 🚂, the spend should help boost jobs; but will add further strain to US borrowing and budget deficit.
Wait, what is..
Borrowing: Well.. its borrowing, specifically in economic terms taking a loan i.e. borrowing money 💰.
Budget Deficit: A fiscal deficit or a budget deficit occurs when a Government spends more money than it makes. Geek out here. Discuss with mom or dad or a big person at home about the United States’ increasing budget deficit and its impact on Inflation 📈.
Woah 😱 Weird 🥴?
Remember the EV Air Cars we covered long ago? Well they’re racing now.. like racing in the air.. EV cars racing in the air.. say it one more time ✈ 😱 ✈. 👇
Inspiring business people to know 🙏
Meet Sara Blakely, our inspiring business person of the week.
Ms Blakely is the Founder of US Apparel company Spanx, that she started over 20 years ago, and grew to a massive $1.2 billion valuation 🙇. Sara started life as a door-to-door fax 📠 sales person; it was during this job she realised how uncomfortable women’s clothing were and relentlessly worked on creating and refining her product concepts, that initially no one wanted to produce. Till one mill owner showed faith and from there they grew by leaps and bounds to hit revenues of $400 million today. Spanx was recently acquired by the Blackstone investment group. 🚀 Read up our F.A.I.L mental model below to see how Ms.Blakely’s story is such an inspiring validation of that model. 👊
Stocks, stonks and.. ⚡️
D2C shoe brand Allbirds zoomed 92% on IPO day ending at $28+ from its $15 IPO price 🚀🚀🚀 .
Indian logistics mega startup Delhivery filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) confirming its IPO plans to raise ~$1 billion. With revenues of ~$500 million and increasing losses, wee’ll need to see how this one goes. Don’t miss this excellent analysis by Entrackr.

Mental models.. whaaaat! 🤯
My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
F.A.I.L or 'First Attempt In Learning' Mental Model - Today's mental model comes from down under country Autralia. Specifically from Mrs Megan Hayes of Mudgeeraba Creek State School who recently won the the Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching.
Much like our Falling not Failing, the F.A.I.L model encourages you to learn by first attempts, i.e. real world experiences. It's important to know that finding ways how something doesn't work or 'fails' ultimately leads you to learning how to get it right. So go on ahead and start learning from first attempts.
Tech, products, toys ++ 🤖
If you want to build a product, maybe make it like this. 👇👇👇 Clearpath Robotics’ aquatic robot collects water quality sample autonomously. No need to endanger humans to measure water pollution. 👏 We might just get a Lego inspired by it 😆.
