Tech stocks nearly halved in value
While political and military tension are rife in Ukraine and Russia, we remain hopeful leaders act responsibly and avoid war. Somewhat welcome to another edition of Business News for Kids. 😔
Busy business this week 💼
You’ll have noticed from previous editions that inflation and economic growth have both been up.. but the stock markets, specifically technology stocks, have dropped 40%+.. with the technology heavy Nasdaq 100 down 16% - if only there was an inverted rocket emoji!🔻📉🚀
As if wanting to prove the ☝️ point, ‘metaverse’ gaming co Roblox’s 🧱 share price dropped 26% in one day, while e-commerce 🛒 challenger Shopify saw stock drop 16% and then another 11% on two consecutive days 😱.
And inspite of losing over $200 billion in one day, troubles for Facebook owner Meta keep mounting - the US state of Texas 🤠 just sued it for “hundreds of billions of dollars” for violating privacy laws by using facial recognition 🤓technology that went again Texas privacy laws.
While UK Tax 🧐 authority, the HMRC, seized its first ever NFTs 😬 as part of a fraud investigation “on suspicion of attempting to defraud it out of £1.4 million”.
In the midst of all this negative downward news, we have atleast something going up and booming on.. the Indian advertising market is what. Expected to grow 22% in 2022 🤷 - making it the world’s fastest growing ad market - and estimated to hit a market size of INR 107,987 crore or a cool $14.5 billion 🤯. The global market for advertising is expected to hit $850 billion 🚀.

Meet Kevin McCoy, our inspiring business person of the week.
Mr. McCoy ‘minted’, the first known NFT titled “Quantum” 🕸. Minted means nothing but created and placed on a blockchain ⛓; in this case the Namecoin chain. On May 3, 2014 Mr. McCoy along with technology entrepreneur Anil Dash and his wife Jennifer McCoy created Quantum, an animated video file, and placed it on a blockchain. He is sometimes also considered as the inventor of NFTs 😱. The Quantum NFT was auctioned by Sotheby’s for $1.47 million in 2021. You can see it here.

My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
Into coding? Learn 'Rubber Ducking' 🐤 🦆! Or more popularly known as 'Rubber Duck Debugging' - a sort of mental model used by programmers to help them find a problem that is causing their code to not work.
Basically what it asks them to do is explain their code out loud.. by.. talking to a rubber duck 🤷 😅 i.e. explain it in super simple terms, and in explaining it line by line in this simple way, while explaining it.. they usually hit eureka and find the solution themselves! Try it next time you're not able to solve that math problem :)More here.
