Busy business this week 💼
Whatsapp sued the Government of India 🇮🇳 (yes you can sue anyone) for a requirement to trace origin of messages, as per India’s new Information Technology rules the “IT Rules 2021” made effective 26 May 2021. The rules, approved by the Indian parliament 🏛 earlier this year, require any social media company to trace the origin of a social media message or post. Whatsapp says doing so impacts user privacy and hence is challenging this requirement 💪. What is privacy? Discuss with Mom or a big person at home.
Netflix famously thought that its competition came from other things people did on the internet, like playing games 🎮, rather than from other streaming 🎥companies. Well, now it looks like it’s getting serious about tackling that competition 🔨, Netflix is reportedly exploring launch of a game subscription & streaming service 📺!
Taking a break from EVs lets talk about a better mode of transport - good old bikes! 🚴 A new startup called The Smart Tire Company is working on a tubeless, airless, tyre 💿 for bicycles based on NASA’s nickel titanium shape memory alloy tyre 🤯 that will power Mars rovers. The tyres are aptly named METL.
Segway, the company that created possibly the first ever personal transporter (remember the two wheels and a stick that humans could drive?), has just launched an e-bike 🛵. The eMoped C80 looks pretty nifty & cool - almost exaclty like the emoji above 👆. 😅
US President Biden 🇺🇸 released the country’s 2022 budget, proposing to spend a whopping $6 trillion 💸, while planning to earn $3.6 trillion 💵 through tax increases for corporates from 21% to 28% and also for those earning $400,000 and above + nearly doubling the capital gains taxes 🚀.
Wait, what is..
Tax Credits: A tax credit 💰 is an incentive that allows tax payers to deduct a certain amount of money from their payable taxes 💵. For e.g. the US government gives Tax Credits upto $7,500 for buying electric cars. 🎉
Sue, Suing, Sued 😅: To file a compliant against someone in court ⚖️. What is a court? Ask Dad or a big person at home.
Budget: A budget is a plan that outlines how a country plans to earn 💵 & spend 💸 money 💰. A budget is proposed by the government in power, which then has to get the budget approved by their parliament or senate as the case may be. Whats a parliament? Whats a senate? Ask Mom or a big person at home.
Restructuring: Changing or reorganising a company to try and make it work better i.e. make higher revenues, save costs, be more profitable 📈 etc.
Logistics: Movement of items and products from one place to another. Logistics is a $183 billion market and includes hyperlocal 🛵 delivery companies to mega large trucking 🚚 & shipping 🚢 companies.
Series A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H: You’ll need it in Stocks, stonks. No we’re not making you learn your ABCD again😅. This is sort of A, B, C, D of raising money though 🤣. Here’s how >> a startup takes money from investors over a period of time, at different stages of its life. Each time they raise (take) this money 💸, the money they get gets classified as a “Series” from A to Z.
Woah 😱 Weird 🥴
Been pestering your parents for a pet? How about getting one for $74,500 😱. Robot maker Boston Dynamics is selling its dog 🐶 robot Spot for just as much 🤯. I think I might get grounded for even asking 😅.
Would you believe, a website from 1996 is still live and looking the same😱! If you’re an internet nerd like us, checkout 👇 the website of hit movie Space Jam 🚀 starring none other than basketball ⛹️♂️ legend Michael Jordan. Experts are calling this website of ‘antique relevance’, just like dad 🥸.
Inspiring business people to know 🙏
Meet Indra Nooyi, our inspiring business person of this week.
Indra Nooyi is an Indian-born businesswoman, who went on to become the first female Chairperson & CEO of consumer giant PepsiCo (2006 to 2018). Did you know brands like Pizza Hut, KFC & Taco Bell are all owned by PepsiCo?! Indra was instrumental in restructuring PepsiCo’s division that owned these brands. A Yale Graduate (its an amazing school to learn business), Indra was born in Chennai, India. She was ranked the most powerful business woman by Forbes in 2009 and was also rated amongst one of the best CEOs in the world by CEOWORLD magazine for 2018.
Stocks, stonks and.. ⚡️
Indoor vertical farming 🪴 company Bowery has raised $300 million as part of its Series C 🐱 investment round. Growing foods indoors has a unique advantage - it allows “creation” of the ideal environment 🌧 required to grow specific types of foods; and moreover help achieve this environment without use of pesticides🪳. Bowery calls this Protected Produce, and has built the BoweryOS that manages & optimise this ‘environment’. It mainly produces salad leafs 🥬 and herbs 🌱 for now, and these products are sold in over 850 retail stores. 🎉
India Logistics SaaS platform FarEye Logistics has raised $100 million in its Series E 🐘 round. FarEye helps companies track & optimise their logistics operations.
Weight loss 🏋️ food & nutrition 🥙 company Noom raised $540 million 🚀 in a Series F 🦊 fund raising on the back of a $400 million revenue in 2020, that was up nearly 100% from the previous year.
Mental models.. whaaaat! 🤯
My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
Root Cause Analysis
🌳 - Remember the
One Step Model
that tells us how to take each step at a time, when solving a problem? Well, think of Root Cause Analysis as the reverse of it 😂.
A Root Cause Analysis or RCA helps us identify the "root cause" of a problem or phenomenon 🌌. You start with the problem or phenomenon you're trying to understand, and ask "what is causing this". Once you find the first cause, you then ask "what causes that cause".. and then "whats causing the cause of the cause" 🤣🤣🤣 - basically keep asking
Why
till you reach the
root cause
.
Do an RCA of the
Aurora
lights with Mom or a big person at home:)

Leaks & sneak peaks are getting so much better at predicting what real products would look like when they are launched. Take the Apple Watch 7 series for example; serial leakers & tipsters Jon Prosser & Ian Zelbo released images of what the watch might look like.
Google started roll out of a new operating system for its Smart Home device the Google Hub. Called the Fuchsia OS, it’s not entirely clear whether this will replace the Android OS used in nearly 90% of the world’s phones and the Chrome OS that runs laptops.
