Busy business this week 💼
Last week Whatsapp sued the Government of India, but this week things have reversed. Twitter 🐦 faced the ire of governments with India issuing it a stern warning, and now it seems Nigeria 🇳🇬 has banned it all together, for deleting 🤺 a tweet by it’s President 🤯. Debate who is right - Governments or Twitter - with Mum or a big person at home.
Uber luxury car company, Rolls-Royce rolled out 🤣 the Boat Tail “their most ambitious car” ever created. Its boot is much like a boat 🚤 - hence the name Boat Tail 🤷! All inclusive with a High Tech Picnic basket in it too. While Rolls Royce didn’t disclose the price, it’s rumoured to cost over a whooping £20 million💰💰💵 ($28 million)! The car might just be the most expensive car ever created & only 3 will ever be made 😱.
Remember Autonomous vehicles from Edition #5? Britain now has a self-driving bus that has come to the streets of Cambridge. But wait, is that a bus or a transformer 🤖? As it is Autonomous, you would expect it to be rather perfect, but not quite. Seems that its robotic looks are scaring pedestrians!
Googles co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are selling Alphabet Shares after many years of no sales. They last sold shares in 2017 when their networth was 30-40 billion, and now they’re both estimated to be worth $90-100 billion E.A.C.H. 🚀🚀
NFTs are back in the news, this time with a Nobel worthy work. University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) created NFTs out of digital documents 🗒relating to the Nobel winning 🏆 invention in cancer immunotherapy by Professor James Allison and is set to auction them on 7th June 2021. Money raised will be used to fund further research. 🚀
Wait, what is..
Social Media: A place, or specifically a website or app, where any person can share information, views, updates and, interact with other persons is a social media site or app. Social Media is an over $100 billion market, and includes companies like Facebook that own facebok.com, Whatsapp and Instagram.
NFT: NFT or Non Fungible Tokens 🪙 are a way to own, and trace ownership of, a digital file 📎. The word Fungible means interchangeable 🔁, hence ‘non-fungible’ is used to signify something that is unique and cannot be replaced by any another. This file can be a work of art 🖼, a song 🎶, a video 🎥 or even just a sound 🤫
Market Share: Remember market size 👇 from Edition #6? Well market share means the amount, or percentage, of market size owned by a company. For e.g. Facebook has an over 80% market share in Social Media 🤯.
Market Size: Market size is nothing but the overall Revenue 💸 every company makes or can potentially make ‘all together’ for a particular industry or product. So when we say social media is a $100 billion market, that means all social media companies put together make revenue of $100 billion. Its always measured on an annual basis, i.e. the Revenue made in one year.
Acquired: When a company (say A) buys another company (say B), one can say that Company A acquired Company B 🤷.
Woah 😱 Weird 🥴
Supersonics 🚀 are back. United Airlines in the US placed orders for 15 jets from Boom Supersonic (a startup would you believe it 🤯) that aims to half flying time😱. Ever since the Concorde went out of service, there hasn’t been another to take its place. Until now. Or until 2029 when first passenger flights are expected.👇
While we are on the topic of supersonics, here is another to blow your mind. Meet the world’s first electric flying 🛸 race car 🏎 😱. 👇
Inspiring business people to know 🙏
Meet Larry Page & Sergey Brin, our inspiring business persons of this week.
Larry & Sergey are founders of search giant Google 🔭. They met at Stanford University and launched Google out of a garage in 1996. Today Google is not just into search (though a large part of its revenue still comes from it), but has expanded to Email, Cloud Software, Pixel Phones, Android OS and Autonomous cars. Here is an interesting timeline of their journey.
Stocks, stonks and.. ⚡️
Stackoverflow the go-to website for answering questions for coders & developers was acquired by Naspars’ Prosus for $1.8 bn. Naspars is one of the world’s largest internet conglomerates. Ask Dad or a big person at home whats a cong-lo-merate 🤯 ?!
Can you imagine signing documents, when you can’t meet the person? Well DocuSign solved that many years a go with its Digital Signatures solution. It has now acquired ‘smart contracts’ startup Clause. No not Santa Claus 🎅 .. this one is a Clause with an e 😬. We’ll cover more about Smart Contracts in future editions.
Mental models.. whaaaat! 🤯
My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
Proximate Cause
🕶 - Moving from
Root Cause Analysis
to Proximate Clause.
While root cause tries to focus on the initial or very first🥇reason for the cause of a problem, the Proximate Cause talks about the latest or most immediate reason that caused the problem. Read the ship 🚢 example
here
.
Proximate Cause thinking can help develop quick-fix ⚡️ solutions to a problem and drive focus when time is of the essence🔥. While solving the root cause may take a lot of time, solving the most immediate problem can help get things working again 🚀.
Discuss with Mom, Dad or a big person at home if they've ever had to solve a problem in this way.
Tech, products, toys ++ 🤖
Microsoft looks like it is ready to launch their Windows 11 operating system. It’s last major release of the OS was in 2014 with Windows 10, so the arrival of 11 will surely shake things up. Did you know Windows is the world’s leading OS with nearly 90% market share?
Ever heard of Pixel Buds? If you haven’t, Pixel Buds are like Apple’s Air Pods 😜 but by Google. Well, Google has launched a new Pixel Bud named the Pixel Buds A-Series. It costs $99 instead of the usual $179 and you can listen to music 🎧 for three hours with just a 15-minute quick charge ⚡️. Sweet.
