Busy business this week 💼
Microsoft’s market cap hits $2 trillion 😱. It is the second company ever to do that, after Apple. They hit $2 trillion last week Tuesday. It took them 44 years to hit the first $1 trillion from 1975 to 2019. To hit $2 trillion you ask? Well, that took only 2 years!! Riding on a high, they also launched Windows 11👇.
After Disneyland re-opened all it’s resorts, cruises 🛳 🛳 🛳 get cruising too, or at least starting trials to start cruising 🤷. Last week, Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas left Miami on a 2 day cruise, becoming the first cruise ship to set sail from a US 🇺🇸 port in 15 months. The cruise industry is a nearly $40 billion industry; it’ll sure be good to have it going full steam 😅 ahead.
Google is opening its first retail store 🏬! And here we thought they’d have hundreds already in place. The store opened in New York City and will feature Google’s own hardware including Pixel buds 🎧 , Nest smart home gadgets, Fitbits ⌚️ , and other devices.
Amazon owned AWS acquired encrypted messaging app Wickr 💬, making a play into the Productivity space thats dominated by the types of Microsoft, Google, Slack and more. You may never have heard of Wickr, for good reason.. they power communication for super secret 🕵️♀️ organisations and governments 🤯.
Panasonic, a long time Tesla partner and battery supplier (did you think they only made TVs?! 🤔), sold ALL of its shares in the EV car maker 😱 in the process converting $29 million odd from 2010, into a billion odd 🤯🤯🤯 by 2020.

Market Capitalisation: Or simply said market cap is the total value or worth of the shares of a company. Say a company has 10,000 shares and each share is worth $100 today, then it’s market cap is 10,000 x $100 = $1,000,000 (a cool one million $$s).
EV: Electric Vehicle
Direct Listing: Direct listing in another way of taking a company public and listing it’s shares for sale on a stock market. Its different to an IPO. Discuss with Mom or a big person at home. See how a company plans to list this way in Stocks, Stonks 👇
SPAC: A SPAC or a Special Purpose Acquisition Company is another way of taking a company public. It’s kind of similar to direct listing, but not quite. In a SPAC deal a SPAC company lists itself on the market, with the only intention to buy a private company. It has no business or products of its own when it lists. Once it lists itself, it simply buys a private company which then becomes part of it and hence inherently becomes a publicly listed company too. Easy, no?
Bitcoin (refresher): A digital currency created, and owned, by the people. Usually currencies, be they $ or £ or ₹, are created by the Government of a country; however, Bitcoins have been created by a person(s) rumoured to be known as Satoshi Nakamoto 🥷. They are not always considered to be a legal currency.

Galactic gets a go ahead! Space tourism company, Virgin Galactic has won FAA approval to fly earthlings 🤡 to space 😱 🚀. They’ll get you there for way cheaper than $28 million 🤯.

Satya Nadella is an Indian born American executive who is also the Chairman & CEO of Microsoft. Joining Microsoft in 1992, he took over the reigns as CEO in 2014 and has been instrumental in growing Microsoft to a $1 trillion company by 2019 and zooming it’s value to $2 trillion in 2021. He studied Electrical Engineering in his bachelors and holds dual Masters degrees 🤯 🤯 for computer sciencesand bsuiness administration! 🚀

Money 💵 💷 transfer startup Transferwise, now rebranded as Wise 🥸, is going ahead with a Direct Listing at the London Stock Exchange, reportedly at a $7-8 billion valuation.
Content and publishing company BuzzFeed (makers of those yummy Tasty 😋videos) are also headed to the markets but are using the SPAC route, and targeting a $1.5 billion valuation. Discuss the difference between SPACs & Direct Listing with Dad or a big person at home.

My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
