Busy business this week 💼
While the Virgin Galactic flight soared high, mysterious bidder of the $28 million Blue Origin seat seemingly backed out 😱; sighting “scheduling conflicts”. We’re wondering whats more important than going to Space 🤔! They are being replaced by 18 year old Oliver Daemen, a certified Pilot 👨✈️. Making this space flight rather unique. It will have both the youngest and oldest person to go to Space; the oldest being Flight Instructor & NASA Women In Space programme participant Wally Funk, 82. Wooo hoo. 🎉
Ford 🚗 and GM 🚙 have decided to remove the title Chairman to be replaced with the way more gender equal and diverse ‘Chair’ 🪑. Just last week I was asking mum why are there only Chairman’s and not a Chairwoman 🤯💪🎉.
Netflix that long considered gaming 🎮 as its arch competitor, is now adding them as a whole new service in their app, planned to be launched within next year. They sure were serious about that competition 🤺.
This 👆 move is surprising especially so given 👉 Marvel movie, Black Widow, out last weekend, charged customers $30 for just renting the movie 💰 and made a cool $60 million from streaming service Disney+ 🤯. That's more than a quarter of all the $215 million Disney expected to make on the opening weekend ⚡️.
Reserve Bank of India 🏦, India’s central bank, has banned MasterCard from adding new credit card users in the country 😱. They seem to have been banned them because they didn’t follow local data 💾 storage rules.
Wait, what is..
Advertising 🎫 : When a product or service owner tells us about them. Here ‘us’ is ideally their Target Audience. Companies use various mediums to advertise e.g. TV ads 📺, Print ads via newspapers 🗞 and magazines, Radio ads 📻, Outdoor ads via hoardings, Digital ads via websites and mobile apps📱.
Target Audience: Those lovely people 👩🧑👨 that are most likely to use your product or service. Like you all for us 🤗.
Central Bank: Every country has a central bank 🏦, which is the primary authority that controls the production and distribution of money 💵 in that country. It also makes all related monetary policy.
Monetary Policy: Monetary policy is the set of rules and regulations that govern the production 💰 and distribution 💸 of money. Discuss some examples of monetary policy with Mom or a big person at home.
Neo-banking (useful later): New age banks 🏦, that use Technology to their advantage and offer their service mostly virtually, i.e. they don’t have a physical branch you can visit, and everything is done online. All you need is a mobile or PC to get banking ⚡️.
Woah 😱 Weird 🥴
A Super Mario video game, first released in 1996, kept sealed for the past 25 years 🤯, sold last week for $1,500,000 - aka a cool 1.5 million dollars 🤑. In doing so it became the most expensive Video game ever sold 😱. Can you guess it’s original price?
$1.5 million seems out of reach? How about $2,150 instead 🤣. For a watch ⌚️. A Super Mario 🍄 watch. Super Mario collectibles are clearly something.. enthusiast anyone ⚡️?
Inspiring business people to know 🙏
Meet Wally Funk, our inspiring person of this week. Her story is as cool as her name.
Exception alert: We usually cover a business person, but Ms.Funk’s story was way too inspirational to let our readers miss out on. Ms. Funk is an American Aviator 👩✈️ that broke the glass ceiling for women in aviation 🛩. She was the first female flight instructor, the first female investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, AND for the FAA, that investigate plane crashes 😱. She was the youngest Graduate of NASA’s Women in Space 🛰 program, and one of its best performers, but was never allowed to become an astronaut. This week she is likely to become the oldest person to travel to space 🚀. Read more about her in this Guardian story. Ask Dad or a big person at home what does “breaking the glass ceiling” mean?
Stocks, stonks and.. ⚡️
Erstwhile startup, and Walmart owned Indian e-commerce biggie, Flipkart raised a booming $3.6 billion, resulting in an eye popping 🤩 $37.4 billion 🤑 valuation. We’re left wondering what’ll happen to their valuation at IPO 😬. Meanwhile, a report estimated that the Indian e-commerce market will reach $125 billion by 2025 🚀.
Neo-banking app Revolut raised $800 million from investment biggies Softbank & Tiger Global, valuing them at $33 billion 🤯 🤯🤯 . Would you believe they were valued at $5.5 billion just last year 😱😱😱. Thats some growth.
Food delivery company Zomato had it’s IPO subscribed 38 times over i.e. people offered to buy nearly 38x the number of shares that were available 😱. Keeping up the IPO hype, PayTM, another Indian payment behemoth filed for its IPO and plans to raise $2.2 billion, ~2x of what Zomato plans to raise.
Revise 🥸: Raised, Valued, IPO from the Wait, What Glossary 👈
Mental models.. whaaaat! 🤯
My dad insisted we put this section in here, even though I protested saying its going to be a while before kids need to apply mental models. Mental models are nothing but ways of thinking, you can use as a framework, to take decisions or solve problems. Who knows, they might just be useful!
Inversion as a Mental Model ⏳
- When faced with a decision or desire e.g. "I want to get rich"💰. We may tend to think of the solution in only one direction - e.g. How do I get rich? What 'inversion' tells us is to think of the solution starting from the
Opposite,
i.e. inverted, view e.g. How will I get poor? ⚡️
How does inverted thinking help you might wonder? Well say if you asked "How do I get rich?" you'd think of solutions like "Let me invest in some high risk stocks" 🤑 or "Lets try the lottery" 💸 - in the process you may end up making some big mistakes and actually end up becoming poorer than richer.
Whereas, if you ask the inverted question "How will I get Poor?" you will think of answers like "By spending more than I earn" 💵 or "By not working to earn" etc. - in the process you will have discovered some very important rules that you MUST avoid and hence by following these you'll probably end up becoming richer than poorer. 🤟
